When upgrading tires and wheels, it's important to consider the weight you are adding to the bike because rotational mass has the biggest effect of any weight added to your bike. While the Surron is not noticeably affected by 100's of grams or even a few pounds of weight like a mountain bike, adding too much weight in the tires can have a noticeable impact on handling, power, and range.

View our Lap Time Leaderboard to see how tires affect total performance, lighter weight does not mean faster, traction and handling can beat weight off-road! In fact, BOTH our 16/19 and 18/21 crushed the lightweight OEM CST tires in our lap time competition. Spoiler Alert...16/19 is the performance champion in our off-road tests.

Tire Weight Chart Off-Road Tires

  • eMoto bikes like the Surron max recommended rear tire width is 4.3", anything wider will be difficult to fit between the swingarm and chain and may require extreme wheel dishing and/or cutting the tire knobs.
  • Wider tires may require dishing the rear wheel away from the chain. Please see our video about wheel dishing.
  • Dunlop 16" rear tires are extremely wide, the only 90/100-16 Dunlop we recommend for small eMoto bikes is the Dunlop MX54 available here.

*Requires a custom wheel, which might also increase the total weight gain.

**Not recommended on narrow 19x1.4" OEM rims, this tire is meant for a 1.85" rim. Also, the clearances are so tight that knob trimming might be required.

Green highlighted tires are the stand-out weight champions for their size.

Red indicates problems with fitment on the Surron

Charged Wheels are built with upgraded 10g spokes and 2mm HD Tubes, contributing to the weight gain of the total wheel package. They are over-built for a surron and incredibly durable.

18/21 For The Lift!

For those wanting to make the Surron bigger an 18/21 combo is one of the best ways to accomplish a larger Surron. Rotational mass has a direct impact on acceleration, power, and range. In our experience, when only adding a few pounds per wheel, the difference is negligible and well worth the upgrade in traction and reliability. When shopping for an 18/21, please be very careful with tire selection, WE ONLY RECOMMEND A 90/100-18 sized tire for this setup anything larger is too heavy, and requires cutting off your right side knobs and destroying your cornering abilities. Avoid 100/100 tires for these reasons! 90/100-18 are difficult to find, but the weight is worth the wait!!

Why we LOVE the 16/19 setup so much...

We are 100% off-road enthusiasts riding primarily in the mountains and desert of Utah, with trips to Idaho, Colorado, and the PNW. Our favorite wheel/tire combo the 19/16 was designed for SuperMini motocross racing bikes which weigh 150lbs and make them the best motocross tire match for the Surron. This strikes a great balance between weight, traction, carcass stiffness, and flat protection. The traction is incredible from this setup, the weight gain is minimal, the tire selection is amazing, and it only requires building a single rear wheel, you can retain your OEM front wheelset. The tires we run depends on the terrain and the other huge advantage to 19/16 is the amazing tire selection from the motocross racing industry...there is a tire for everyone in these sizes.

Tubeless vs Tubes

Based on our experience 1.5-2mm tubes work great on the Surron with upgraded (stronger) motocross tires. All of the tires we sell are hand selected to minimize weight gains and dramatically increase traction and reliability.

There is no clear advantage to go tubeless on the Surron, as you can run 15 psi (or less) using a 2mm tube as long as you run a high quality tire with a stronger carcass than the CST. Tire pressures vary by rider weight and terrain. With a high quality tire, you can enjoy the benefits of <15psi (most riders). Also, spoiler alert, the tubliss system is not any lighter than a 2mm tube!!! For the $99 + install price you pay it's not worth it for most people.

Why don't you list a 26" or 27.5" or 29" Mountain Bike tire?

Bottom Line: We love you, we don't want to see you hurt! We believe it would be irresponsible to recommend running an ultra-light MTB tire and rim setup on the SurRon. These tires were not designed for a 110+ lb motorcycle and we have seen first hand the devastating injuries that come from front wheels exploding on bikes and motorcycles, the weight savings is not worth the risk in our opinion. If you run a MTB wheel on your SurRon, please be careful and know that you have limitations on what that wheel and tire is capable of.
