Bonnell 805 & 902: Next‑Generation Electric Dirt Bikes Unveiled at AIMExpo

A new chapter for electric off‑road

In January 2026, Bonnell unveiled its first production‑intended electric dirt bikes — the mid‑sized 805 and the flagship 902 — at the American International Motorcycle Expo (AIMExpo) in Anaheim, California. Charged Cycle Works documented the moment in a recent video from the expo, showing the bikes on display and capturing excitement from attendees. The unveiling signaled that Bonnell was moving from concept to reality and positioned the company at the forefront of high‑performance electric off‑road machines.

Bonnell 805: Agile power for trails and track

  • Power and speed: The 805 produces 56 hp (42 kW) of peak power and is targeted to reach speeds over 80 mph. Its new generation of EBMX‑built controller manages this output with tunable ride modes. This is not the EBMX X-9000 but an all new technology specifically designed for this machine called the X30.

  • Battery options: Riders can choose between a 3.9 kWh Core battery for general use and a 4.7 kWh Race battery for more demanding rides.

  • Chassis and suspension: The bike uses a forged‑aluminium frame and a wheelbase of about 52.8 in (1,340 mm). Suspension comes from Sirris: a 245 mm‑travel F43 fork and R46 shock provide a precision based balanced front‑rear travel.

  • Braking and weight: Bonnell’s own forged brakes slow the 211 lb (96 kg) machine.

  • Ride technology: Five customizable ride modes, a Joy‑Con bar‑mounted controller, a digital display with Precision/Performance/Race layouts and a built‑in lap timer allow riders to tailor the bike to trails or motocross tracks.

  • Availability: Bonnell expects to begin deliveries in Q2 2026.

These specs make the 805 an agile step between lightweight e‑motos and full‑sized motocross machines. We ultimately think this is a machine that has track driven race performance but will be a highly competitive and possibly dominant trail bike.

Bonnell 902: Flagship performance that rivals gas bikes

  • High‑output power: The 902 delivers 87 hp (65 kW) and is expected to exceed 100 mph. Bonnell’s custom motor is paired with an EBMX X42 controller — a unit larger and more powerful than the X30 on the 805.

  • Battery options: Three swappable batteries are planned — Sprint (4.7Kwh, with an additional 15lb weight saving), Core (5.6 kWh) and Race (6.7 kWh) packs — balancing weight savings and endurance.

  • Chassis, suspension and wheels: The 902’s forged‑aluminium frame has a 56.5–57.6 in (1,435–1,465 mm) wheelbase. Suspension options include a Sirris Enduro package with 285 mm of travel front and rear or a Race setup with 310 mm front and 320 mm rear travel. Like the 805, it uses 21 in front and 18 in rear wheels but with a stronger 520 chain and Magura forged MX brakes.

  • Custom engineering: Every component — from the hydro‑formed swingarm to the gearbox and controller — is bespoke.

  • Electronics: Like the 805, the 902 features swappable batteries, multiple ride modes, traction control, regen braking, Clutch and a programmable Joy‑Con controller.

  • Availability: Bonnell targets Q4 2026 for the first deliveries.

Shared tech and smart features

Both e‑motos use the same digital ecosystem:

  • Swappable batteries make pit‑stops faster and allow riders to select lighter “Sprint” packs or longer‑range cores.

  • Joy‑Con controller provides index‑finger control for regen braking, electronic clutch simulation or other functions.

  • Customizable ride modes and traction control help riders tune throttle response, regen strength and wheelie assistance while maintaining grip.

  • Digital dash offers Precision, Performance and Race layouts plus a built‑in lap timer.

Charged Cycle Works’ video demonstrates how riders can switch between modes on the fly using the Joy‑Con and how the lap‑timer function suits motocross tracks. These electronics, combined with robust suspension and braking systems, position Bonnell’s bikes as some of the most advanced e‑motos on the horizon.

Final Thoughts

The Bonnell 805 and 902 made a strong impression at the AIMExpo, proving that high‑performance electric dirt bikes are no longer vaporware. With features like swappable batteries, customizable ride modes, and advanced suspension, the 805 aims to deliver lightweight agility while the 902 pushes into 450‑cc territory. As Bonnell finalizes testing and prepares for release in 2026, enthusiasts should stay tuned — the next generation of electric off‑road is nearly here.
